Was reading about it just recently in Lost Focus - very much agree on that. Challenge is…. How to get the flow going in something that does not come naturally?
Ah, this is a good question. Picasso said something along the lines of "Inspiration finds us working." And I've seen this repeated by creatives and leaders a lot.
There is SO MUCH to do without a real feeling of inspiration, so many tasks and administrative hassles, and also our core work — whether it's our paid work or our aspirational (unpaid) work. We would all love to inspiration to strike every time we sat down to get something done. Unfortunately, waiting for inspiration to strike mainly find us... waiting.
ACTION is the great mover and motivation of inspiration. That where flow comes in. Action is movement. And movement results in flow.
And here's a trick of the trade: What comes naturally is having FUN. When we are having fun (laughing, enjoying ourselves, smiling) we are in the moment, we are present, we are inspired — with life. And that's natural! And we experience FLOW. The flow of fun.
So finding activities that are FUN is an immediate way to feel inspired — and then we can try to capture that feeling, that joy and carry it into the "something" that doesn't come naturally. When we create a habit of inspiring ourselves, then we can find that inspiration, that kick-start, that impetus that gets the natural flow going.
And if, in the long run, we just CAN'T find a natural flow with whatever has the focus of our attention — then it means we need to find a new focus to something that does inspire us naturally.
We can't force the flow. The flow must come naturally. But we can inspire it to get going — through inspiration, through action, through fun.
