Question from a reader:
“My life looks perfect, but I feel worthless inside. I'm sometimes paralyzed with guilt because I am so well paid to do nothing. How do I find purpose?”
My answer:
Yours is a common challenge these days. You’re in good company so don’t despair and don’t squander your life or your riches wandering aimlessly, rudderlessly, purposelessly…
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service to others.”
Gandhi said that. And it’s true. We all face feelings of purposelessness. We question the point of life. While many struggle to survive, those of us who are blessed with comfort and ease can feel uneasy and uncomfortable because of it. (The Universe has an ironic sense of humor!)
Pledge yourself in service to others. Somehow. Some way. Volunteer. Give back. Offer help, expertise, assistance, presence, advice, attention… Find someone or something to raise up, elevate, lift higher and in so doing you shall experience a rise in emotional well-being, purpose, joy and fulfillment.
It’s an axiom. A universal truth. A sure thing: LOSE yourself in service to others — however, whatever, whomever — and you will FIND yourself.
You owe it to yourself to enjoy your good fortune by receiving it with gratitude and passing along the energetic abundance with which you’ve been blessed. By giving your gifts — your talents, your time, your money, your energy, your attention, your compassion — you will be the greatest recipient of the gift. (Universal irony again!)
Don’t focus on the doldrums of being.
Re-focus on serving others. Find those in need of assistance and assist them. Find a need and fill it. By helping others you will help yourself the most. And you will find the very act of doing will be its own reward. Your cup will be filled; it will runneth over, allowing you to fill the cups of others. The gratitude and appreciation and blessings you receive in return will be icing on the cake.
The purpose you seek is seeking you.
And it’s lying in wait in the form of service. Become an instrument of service and you will become an instrument of purpose!
Promise.
